Dangerous Ants to Watch Out for

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are a danger to your home or business because they destroy wood. Although they primarily invade outbuildings, they can also be relentless when they get inside your home. Once they find their way into your house, it’s only a matter of time before they leave destruction in their wake. They’re especially attracted to wooden structures that are moist or rotting.

A worker carpenter ant can be dark brown to black in terms of color. They’re about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch in length and they look shiny. They’re easily identified because they’re larger than any regular ant. They have heart-shaped heads and their thorax has a rounded profile.

Odorous House Ants

These brown or black ants give off a rotten coconut smell if you accidentally step on them. However, what’s most disturbing about the odorous house ants is that they can contaminate your food. It’s very difficult to get rid of them once they get into your home. In terms of length, these ants are about 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch. Their thorax is uneven and they have a single node between their abdomen and thorax.

Pavement Ants

Dark brown or black pavement ants that are 1/8 of an inch long usually nest in pavement cracks, under foundations, along sidewalks and stone walls or even under slabs of concrete. However, when they forage for food inside homes. Grooved parallel lines can be seen on their head and thorax and their thorax can have small spines that extend out of the rear end.
